In 1954, Life Magazine reported on the surge of women buying men's and boy's shirts and blazers for themselves from the Brooks Brothers store in NYC, so much so that the store "opened a counter, placed discretely at the rear of the main floor" for women and preppy female college students to buy the men's clothes (eventually leading the brand to make women's clothing). I feel like I was just let in on a super secret that only really cool fashion forward prepsters knew about.
